Brother HL-L5200DW is a mid-range desktop laser printer designed for individual or small group use. It’s the type of machine that sits in a corner, silently doing its work.
Many tiny and home workplaces still use mono laser printers. Despite the fact that new models are more evolutionary than revolutionary, a dependable printer capable of producing high-quality prints at a reasonable price remains the most important criterion for this type of use.

Design and features
Brother HL-L5200DW is designed with dark grey and black case which is unashamedly cuboids, with just flip-over paper support at the top front to detract from its clean lines. Next to the paper output slot is a simple yet functional control panel with a single-line LCD.
The main paper tray pulls out from the bottom of the front panel and holds up to 250 pages. There’s also a multi-purpose tray that folds down from above the main tray and can hold an additional 50 sheets of special media, such as envelopes. Extra trays for 250 or 520 sheets are offered as an option.
The two-part drum and toner cartridge slots in simply from under the front panel and should be better for 8,000 pages with the high-capacity cartridge attached. The drum has a yield of 50,000 pages, thus it will most likely only need to be replaced once during the printer’s lifetime.
The Brother Creative Centre, a status monitor, and the driver are included in the software, but you can also download a wireless print app for iOS or Android smartphones that quickly and simply locates the printer for a connection.
Performance and print quality
HL-L5200DW can print at a top speed of 40 pages per minute. A 20-page document can be printed at 30.8ppm under real-world conditions, which is still quite good for a printer. The standard 5-page text test yielded 18.8ppm, but the text plus graphics document yielded 13.6ppm.
Even if the printer is next to you on the desk, noise levels peaked at 64dBA at 0.5m, which isn’t much higher than many inkjets and shouldn’t bother you.
Brother HL-L5200DW results in good print quality, as it is with most Brother laser printers. The text is crisp and clear, with no visible toner splatter at the default resolution of 1,200dpi. Business graphics are also crisp and tidy, with enough grayscale variance to display a wide variety of colors from an original. The photos are a little patchy in spots, but they’re more than acceptable for most purposes.
